PAVING THE RUNWAY SAFETY AREA

Paving the runway safety area (overrun) was EASY.  It brought the landing roll-out length of runway 21 to 3,125′. Getting the FAA to update their charts and facility directory is HARD. In the (hopefully) not-too-distant future the charts will reflect our new paved length of 3,125′. In the meantime, trees and brush are being removed on the approach end of runway 3. Come check it out soon!

SOLAR-POWERED TAXIWAY LIGHTS

Our solar-powered taxiway lights have survived their first year in service and their first winter without any damage.  Thanks to Jared Bilancieri for raising them up by 15″, putting them above the snow all the time.  No shoveling needed.  They make us look like “Down Town!”  Thanks to MassDOT Aeronautics Division for funding 80% of the cost and to Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Kate Hogan for their ongoing support as we pursue our mission of Boosting the Economy, Serving the Community, and Nurturing the Environment – since 1969!”

DON’S BIRTHDAY BONFIRE BASH

Join 6B6 owner Don McPherson and his hardy friends as they celebrate with a Birthday Bonfire Bash on Sunday, March 1st at 4pm.  Enjoy a HUGE fire, a small bit of cake and a wee dram of some very special single malt (he is Scottish after all!)  For the third year in a row, Nancy’s staff will offer up their venison chili, made from the annual airport deer round-up.  Not ready for game?  You’re welcome to bring your own meat, rolls, and beverage.  Grab your favorite party accomplices and jovial spirit.  Musical instruments encouraged!  All are welcome, especially ‘joke tellers’ and ‘yarn spinners’.  No gifts please, just bring a little time to share with Don!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BUSINESS AS USUAL AND BUSIER THAN USUAL
It’s still business as usual at the pumps and in the cafe while Don and Nancy seek the next custodian for their beloved and prosperous airport!
Perhaps we should say “busier than usual” for this time of the year.  New insulated and draft-free hangar doors were installed in the north and south hangars and the operations team survived the agony of a  total computer system upgrade.  A few of our tail dragging friends are already enjoying turf runway 12/30 and the operations office has been busy with many folks making good use of the newly paved airport. Nancy’s annual Robert Burns dinner was once again a huge success and the Valentine’s Dinner was sold out.
We recently received Stow Conservation Commission’s Certificate of Compliance for our last Vegetation Management Plan,  clearing the way for more clearing of trees and brush throughout the season.
Whew…that’s a lot for the first couple of months of the year.  As we continue to invest in the future we can’t wait to see what the next few months bring!
CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY WITH NANCY
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 13 14 & 15, the cafe will offer two specials: Green Eggs and Ham and Corned Beef Hash.  On Friday and Saturday nights, Nancy will be serving her famous Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner.  Come and join in on the fun.  Don’t worry if you’re not Irish, there’ll be plenty of Jamison to make you feel truly Irish for the night!
 Phone (978) 897-3934 to be put on the 1-hour daytime call ahead list
or for Friday and Saturday evening reservations.
OPEN HOUSE AND
6B6 turns 51 this year and we plan to celebrate all year long, starting with our family friendly Open House on Saturday, May 2nd.  The day will feature our 3rd annual Runway 5K and Fun Run.  All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Boxborough and Stow Conservation Trusts as they share our interest in preserving open space.  Watch for future NOTAMs closing the airport for two hours Saturday morning.  Come early, run or watch the race, have breakfast, visit our tenants, and then go for a plane ride!  More info to come…
~ 6B6 Airport News ~
MMAF Operations Office
Yes, the airport is officially ‘For Sale’. We have been advertising this fact in Trade-A-Plane since August. We have created a ‘landing page’ on our website for those with interest. We are now carefully sorting through interested parties to ascertain their qualifications to run Minute Man Air Field in a manner befitting its history. We fully expect this process to take 3 to 5 years to complete. Meanwhile, it is truly ‘BUSINESS AS USUAL’.
All sixteen tenants are operating as if nothing has happened, because nothing has happened. Aptis Aviation is still cranking out pilots and advanced ratings. National Aviation Academy is still cranking out FAA Certified Aircraft Technicians. Stow Aviation is still welcoming fly-in visitors and selling ‘Cheap Gas’. But perhaps most importantly, Nancy’s Air Field Café is still cranking out locally sourced menu items prepared with care and served with the personal attention you have come to expect. Nancy is still personally welcoming each guest and helping them feel at home.
MMAF September Calendar
Monday 11/25 -12/3 Nancy’s Cafe Holiday Closure
noon on 11/27 thru noon on 11/29 MMAF Ops Closed
Friday 12/6 EAA CH 196 Party at Nancy’s
Saturday 12/7, 8:30-10am ‘Hangar Talk’
Newly Paved Access Road
The newly paved access drive is now being enjoyed by those of you who drive into Minute Man, and yes, there are quite a few.  Built in 1967 and paved in 1971, our access drive had become a challenge for those wishing to avoid the many potholes that grew ‘overnight’, in spite of our constant efforts to keep them patched.  It is now appreciated by all drivers, but especially by our Snow Plow Team who are now looking forward to running their plows down the newly smoothed surface!
TURF RUNWAY ‘30’
The turf runway ’30’ is now benefitting from recent cutting of brush and small trees on the approach end, once again making landing on the threshold possible for our slow flying, tail dragging, friends!!! Thank you, airport neighbor, Steve Trefry for doing this work for us.
Good Luck!
Cassie Tatro, starting at MMAF 4 years ago at age 17 will be moving on. We will miss her smiling face, her cheerful voice on UNICOM, and competence ‘on the ramp’ at 6B6. We are pleased to announce that she will be moving east to KBED to work at Mike Goulian Aviation. Cassie will work in dispatch and provide customer support and we know she’ll do a great job. Congratulations Cassie!
EAA 196’s has held it’s ‘Last of the season’ Young Eagles Flight Rally Saturday, Nov.9th. Our local Chapter has flown more Young Eagles than any other Chapter in the state!!!  Congratulations to a fantastic crew of pilots and ground operators. Go to EAA 196 Young Eagles for details and the schedule for beginning again next spring.
DEER and TURKEY HUNTING
Deer and turkey hunting is now ongoing through early December. Managing wildlife hazards is an ongoing matter for airport managers, from chasing or scaring critters off runways, to making sure farm tenants don’t plant crops that attract flocking birds, to proper fencing. Yes, hunting is an important arrow in the manager’s quiver. At Minute Man Air Field we encourage responsible hunting on airport property by no less than six properly licensed, highly qualified marksmen & women. Rest assured that when someone calls in a wildlife sighting, even a turtle, we go out to clear the runway and discourage the critters return. Your safety is our number one concern!
Runway ‘3’ Safety Area Paving Updates
Lazaro Paving Company has now fine-graded and compacted our 340’ Safety Area. They will return with their paving crew any day now…  Watch for NOTAMS temporarily displacing our threshold during paving.
Runway ‘12/30’ Improvements
After fine-grading our ‘3′ RSA’, Lazaro Paving moved their grader and attention to Runway ‘12/30’.
Last week runway ’12/30′ was graded, smoothed, compacted then layered with top soil. Thursday, our farm friends from Dancing Plover Farms “fluffed” and fine graded the topsoil, and Friday Boyd Landscaping of Stow hydroseeded the whole shootin’ match. Can you imagine how beautiful that will be when the grass is established? Needless to say, ‘12/30’ will be temporarily NOTAM’d closed until June 30th. But it will be worth it!
Turf Runway 12/30 Re-Opening July 1st!
Calling all taildraggers, join Minute Man Air Field – 6B6, July 1st to help celebrate the re-opening runway 12/30. Time to get those tires on some turf! Starting at noon on the 1st of July, (which also happens to be exactly Minute Man celebrates our 50th Anniversary)! At 6pm we will have a family friendly cookout with hot dogs, soft drinks, and ice cream. You don’t have to land on the turf to help us celebrate our 50th and 12/30 reopening.
